Kompany backs Olise to become 'one of the best in the world'

Vincent Kompany believes Michael Olise will "surely be one of the best in the world one day" as Bayern Munich prepare to take on Real Madrid in their Champions League quarter-final second leg.

Bayern lead the tie 2-1 thanks to goals from Luis Diaz and Harry Kane at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Olise assisting Kane's strike.

Olise has assisted six goals in the Champions League this season, which is the joint-most by a Bayern player in a single edition (also Leroy Sane in 2021-22 and Hasan Salihamidzic in 2001-02).

The Frenchman also leads the way for assists in all competitions among players in Europe's top five leagues this term, with 25.

"We see him every day and he does it at the highest level in the Champions League," said Kompany about Olise.

"He'll surely be one of the best in the world one day. He's on the right track now. Everything he does is right. His level now is one of the best in Europe.

"But if I said now he's the best, people will ask how many titles he's won. He needs to keep going as he's done over the last 18 months. If he keeps going, we'll see what becomes of him."

Bayern's victory at the Bernabeu was the 23rd time they won away from home in the first leg of a two-legged knockout stage tie in the European Cup/Champions League.

The Bundesliga side have only been eliminated in one of the previous 22, suffering an away goals defeat to Inter in the 2010-11 round of 16 (won 1-0 away, lost 3-2 at home).

"It'll come down to lots of things," Kompany said about the second leg.

"It starts with individual quality. There's collective intensity and willingness to go through the pain barrier. Sometimes a referee's decision can decide a game. I don't want that, but it shows that every little detail counts.

"But we're mentally and physically well prepared. And we're excited about this game. You need those positive emotions."
