Vincent Kompany lauded Bayern Munich's response to their Champions League setback after downing Freiburg in Saturday's Bundesliga clash.
Bayern battled to a 2-1 away victory over Freiburg, whose second-half goal from Matthias Ginter proved a mere consolation as Kompany's side held on.
Harry Kane opened the scoring for the German giants before Kim Min-Jae added a second shortly after the interval.
It proved a much-needed response to a 3-0 hammering by Feyenoord in Europe, leading Kompany to laud his side's efforts.
"I knew this game would not be easy so what happened here today was not strange," Kompany told a press conference. "We knew we would have to fight."
"Overall it was a tough week with three games for us. We came here with the right mentality. Maybe it was not our prettiest game but it was a good win because this Freiburg team at home is very tough to beat.
"We can't change the story in Rotterdam but we could influence the story today and that was our only focus. We need to take our steps. There is no success or titles without such moments."
The win helped Bayern move six points clear of champions Bayer Leverkusen in second place, as Kane made it 17 goals in as many league games this season.
Joshua Kimmich was not just impressed with Kane's finishing, though, lauding his overall work rate for the team.
"When I see what kind of game Harry played, after he's had a few problems in the last few weeks, he was in our box, defending everything," Kimmich said on Sky Germany.
"He threw himself into it, got a yellow card, was on the ground, fought, ran back. That was an outstanding game from him.
"Regardless of the goal, he is often judged by goals, but what he did for the team is exactly what we need. It's not always about scoring a hat trick to win, but also about standing together as a team and pulling it off."
Kompany echoed a similar sentiment to Kimmich, with Kane battling hard up top in a thankless task for the visitors.
"Harry keeps working and always stays calm," said the Belgian on Sky Germany. "I can pick out five or six scenes where he defends deep and also plays a very important role in terms of character.
"I think it's clear that he will give everything to be successful this year".
