Match Report
Edmond Tapsoba scored a late own goal as Xabi Alonso's side surrendered a 2-0 lead at Red Bull Arena to slip six points behind Bayern, who beat Freiburg 2-1.
All appeared to be going to plan when Leverkusen broke the deadlock in the 19th minute. Patrik Schick drilled home a rebound after Florian Wirtz hit the post following a fine individual run.
Wirtz was involved again as the reigning Bundesliga champions doubled their lead on 36 minutes, teeing up Aleix Garcia for a tap-in after Peter Gulacsi tipped his initial effort onto the woodwork.
However, Leipzig halved their deficit before the break thanks to a David Raum free-kick, while Benjamin Sesko was denied an equaliser from close range in the second half.
Nevertheless, the hosts did snatch a share of the spoils six minutes from time, when Tapsoba turned a cross beyond Lukas Hradecky.
Data Debrief: Hradecky wracks up half a century
Leverkusen saw their 12-match winning streak across all competitions come to an end following Leipzig's inspired comeback.
Nevertheless, they are now unbeaten in 26 successive away league games, with only Bayern enjoying a longer such run in Bundesliga history (33 between 2012 and 2014).
Meanwhile, Hradecky is unbeaten in his last 50 Bundesliga appearances, becoming only the second player to hit that mark after Jerome Boateng (56 between 2012 and 2014).
Wirtz continued his impressive form, with the influential midfielder now having been directly involved in 18 Bundesliga goals this season.
Meanwhile, Schick took his goal tally for the campaign to 13 - all of which have come since November 8, with only Alexander Isak (14) scoring more across Europe's top five leagues during that time.
