According to Sky Germany, Matthäus disagreed with Yamal's claim that he deserved to win this year's Ballon d'Or. While Yamal won important titles with Spain and Barcelona, Matthäus believes his individual performance this year was not as outstanding as some other players, and he favors Kane.
The race for this year's Ballon d'Or remains wide open. The final results will be announced on October 29, with the awards ceremony held at the Palladium Theatre in Paris. With several weeks until the ceremony, Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has already attracted attention for his comments regarding the Ballon d'Or.
Yamal previously stated in an interview with Movistar Plus: "There are two best players in the world, one is Kylian Mbappé, and the other is me. This year, I think I deserve to win the Ballon d'Or."
In response, Matthäus said: "Lamine Yamal won the Euro with Spain and the league title with Barcelona, but in those achievements, his performance was not as outstanding as some other players. He never returned to the kind of form that made him shine previously, and he has only rediscovered that level this season. He is a very good player, but even with these two major titles, this year does not belong to Lamine Yamal."
However, Matthäus also emphasized that this does not mean Yamal has no chance at winning the Ballon d'Or.
He said: "This does not mean he has no chance. He has everything it takes to be a Ballon d'Or winner. I think major trophies will play a decisive role, so I believe his chances are better than Mbappé's. Mbappé has not won any trophies this year, neither with Real Madrid nor with the French national team."
In contrast, Matthäus is more optimistic about Kane. He stated: "He won the Golden Boot, scored goals in the World Cup, and netted crucial goals in the Champions League. In addition, he won two trophies with Bayern Munich and reached the semi-finals of both the Champions League and the World Cup."
