Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has urged Man Utd to act quickly in their pursuit of Jadon Sancho in order to avoid a repeat of last summer.
The United boss was forced to wait until just days before the 2019/20 season kicked off to land primary transfer target Harry Maguire from Leicester.
Man City had been rivalling them for the defender's signature until they were blown out of the water by United's £80million bid.
A move for Sancho looks on the cards this summer, but United are approaching the deal with a similar caution to how they did with Maguire.
ESPN report that United believe they can push Sancho's valuation down to closer to the £80m mark as there are no other clubs believed to be chasing the Borussia Dortmund star.
Dortmund have already set out their stall with regards to a transfer for the 21-year-old, insisting they will not accept anything less than their £100m valuation.
In addition, the German club have told United that any deal must be concluded by August 10 - over a month before the next Premier League season is due to start.
United therefore have less than a fortnight to reach an agreement if they are to keep with Dortmund's deadline, and deals of such magnitude can often take weeks to pull together.
The deadline has been put in place by Dortmund as they want adequate time to find a replacement for Sancho should he move on.
United chiefs do have some leverage in negotiations, given Sancho has just two years remaining on his current contract.
If Dortmund fail to sell Sancho this summer, they would almost certainly receive a lower fee next year.
Ed Woodward has started the bidding with an offer of £50m, which is wholly unrealistic and will not tempt Dortmund into parting with their prized asset.
The United chief deployed a similar tactic in discussions for Maguire, offering £40m initially, before eventually paying arguably over the odds for the England international.
Solskjaer now wants Woodward to submit a more serious offer and get the transfer completed sooner rather than later.
