Bastian Schweinsteiger recently revealed that upon his retirement last month, German Chancellor Angela Merkel sent him a message.

"I actually got a message from Angela Merkel about my career ending. It's really nice to feel that she thinks of me in such a moment. A Chancellor does not have to do that, "said the 2014 World Champion in an interview with Bild am Sonntag.

Schweinsteiger had announced the end of his active career on 8 October. Most recently, the 35-year-old played in the USA at Chicago Fire. In the future, he will work as a TV pundit for the ARD and is expected to celebrate his premiere in March 2020.

Whether he would accept the offer of national coach Joachim Loew to sit on the German Football Association, Schweinsteiger was open. "Jogi wrote me a farewell very nice. We always had a good, honest relationship. And in fact he made me the offer to have a look at the DFB," he said. "This is a great opportunity that I really did not expect. Let's see if I'll use it in the future."
