Werder Bremen have confirmed that an unnamed player will enter a two-week quarantine period due to somebody close to him testing positive for Covid-19.

The Bundesliga returns this weekend amid the coronavirus pandemic, with Werder hosting Bayer Leverkusen on Monday night.

The club said on Twitter: 'Due to the positive test of somebody in his personal circle, one Werder player has been placed under a two-week quarantine. The player in question tested negative for coronavirus'.

The news comes less than 24 hours before the Bundesliga's return after over two months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The German league is set to become the first major league to make a comeback in order to complete the current season, after other league's such as France's Ligue 1 and Holland's Eredivisie decided to cancel their seasons.

Werder Bremen have not been the only German club to experience a setback ahead of their return to action.

Bundesliga 2 side Dynamo Dresden's squad and staff were all forced into a two-week lockdown after two players tested positive for the virus whilst training.

Top flight side Cologne thought their comeback was not going to happen after two players and one staff member tested positive for coronavirus.

However, they have since had the all-clear to return to the training pitch ahead of their match-up with Mainz on Sunday.

Other leagues such as the Premier League are still squabbling over a potential return in June. Factors such as neutral venues are still yet to be confirmed in the UK, with clubs still to finalise details on testing and financials.
