Atletico Madrid prevented a potentially costly stalemate against Girona thanks to goals from Diego Godin and Antoine Griezmann.
Match Reports
Diego Godin and Antoine Griezmann kept Atletico Madrid's challenge alive as they kicked off a huge week in LaLiga's title tussle with a 2-0 win over Girona at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Coach Diego Simeone had promised at the weekend that Atleti would fight champions Barcelona "until our last breath" and Godin's scrappy 76th-minute header kept them in the hunt.

39' CLOSE! Koke's shot hits the bar
Koke unleashes a rocket from outside the box that hits the underside of the bar before bouncing out to Saul who fouls Alcala while trying to head the rebound on target. What a goal that would have been from Koke though!
76' GOAL! Atletico 1-0 Girona (Godin)
GOALLLL!!! Upon review, VAR confirmed that a defender's leg just kept Griezmann onside before he headed the ball over to Godin who finished into an empty net. That seems harsh on Girona who have played incredibly well, but it was the right call in the end. Atletico Madrid 1-0 Girona.
94' GOAL! Atletico 2-0 Girona (Griezmann)
GOOALLLL!!!! Griezmann was played behind the defence by Vitolo on the counter-attack, and the former stared down Gorka before chipping it over the goalkeeper's head and into the back of the net with just seconds left! Atletico Madrid 2-0 Girona

We beat Girona after 5 draws...finally. Very decent performance from us, but don’t know how to blame them cuz all of them seem very tired and exhausted. Griezmann contributed 2 goals and we took 3 points, good enough. But Morata C’mon...just pass to someone in 6 yards and stop losing possession like that, this match would be much easier if Morata had better decision making. Hope he can improve quickly
