Saturday was not for the fair-weather. The sky gloomed, the rain poured, and the sun felt like it was at least six months away from making an appearance.
It was the sort of day where a strong love for their football club was what drew supporters to the Etihad because there weren't any other redeeming features.
And it was the sort of day where, before Pep Guardiola's arrival, opposition teams would have fancied their chances against the Blues. Manuel Pellegrini's team were unplayable at their best but too often gave the impression that they simply didn't fancy it if conditions didn't suit.
Say what you like about the attacking quality on display on Saturday afternoon but this is a team that never gives up and fights until the very last whistle.
They showed it in the Centurions campaign where new Premier League records were set for consecutive victories and highest points tallies, from Raheem Sterling's late winner at Bournemouth to kickstart it all to Gabriel Jesus finishing it off on the final day with the last kick at Southampton.
They showed it last season as they fought back from a seemingly helpless position against a seemingly invincible Liverpool, overturning a seven-point deficit by winning their last 14 games. Vincent Kompany's howitzer against Leicester summed it up - whenever they needed something, they found it.
And everybody that left the Etihad on this miserably Mancunian afternoon had witnessed the same fighting quality from the Premier League champions.
City's decision-making on the day was as questionable as the England rugby team, taking a bizarre approach to testing Southampton's goal that saw them fail to get any of their first 18 shots on target. There were too many crosses, too many runs into blind alleys, and not enough calm.
Not once did City stop going though. Plug and plug and plug they did until Kyle Walker's blasted ball across the box was smashed home by Aguero.
Pass, pass, cross, repeat until Angelino's ball could only be tipped by Alex McCarthy into Walker's path. With three minutes of normal time remaining, City had done it, the players, managers and supporters all united in a breathless euphoria aided by the sense of jeopardy that is normally missing from such encounters.
Whether that will ultimately be enough to see Guardiola's side claim a third successive title remains unclear. Seeing Liverpool have a similar wobble should encourage them although Jurgen Klopp's men still sit above them, and more unforced errors from the Blues will only harm their cause.
But, in case it was ever in doubt, this performance reminded all that the champions are very much alive.

I guess this Liverpool vs City at Etihad and Anfield are gonna be the most blistering of football matches to ever take place . The level of competence in both the teams is just breath taking . I don't think that any PL team from the past can match the level of these two teams . It is just football at its best. Probably better than any El Classico to have taken place . No league has seen such title race that's for sure .
Heheh winning points is that what determines a brand of football? Pep’s Barça has been the best team is the history of football and for that until now, they’ve won all the possible trophies in one season how can you even compare today’s City and Liverpool? People forget about the past once they see something new coming in, you can’t compare anything from these two teams to Pep’s Barça and I’m sure that every football pundit would agree with me on this

Now if you think so let’s how many trophies they will keep on winning with that style. They both used a lot of money to build those teams while Barça used the academy.
Bro you have to understand that the argument is not how the team was formed. The point is which team is the better footballing team . If you take that Barcelona and this Man city and LFC then surely these City and LFC teams are defeating that Barcelona team . These teams are truly a class apart . The brand of football that we are playing is truly beyond the reach of any team . If you are gonna tell me that that Barca team would amass a 100 points in the prem then I would say you are absolutely wrong . There is no chance that they are going on a winning streak of 18 games or amassing 100 points or just losing 1 match in the entire season . They couldn't do it in La liga nevermind Prem.

sorry to break your myth but it is better than them . That style of football was very new that time and that's why no team was able to anything about it . But that Barca team is getting beaten easily by Man city and LFC.

I still believe that this level of football that got City and Liverpool doesn’t reach the level had Barça’s Pep and Madrid’s Mou. That’s my point of view

Pep vs Mou in Spain was the best fixtures and most enjoyable. Media always exaggerate when it’s about English football league

aguero wont work well against teams parking the bus beacause he needs space. once he got abit more space he will definitely score. he will do well against liverpool as they will not have 5 ppl surrounding him
Against Liverpool,Jesus is more needed to breakdown stubborn Liverpool defence, especially in the beginning, then after leading ,Aguero can come on as substitute! playing Aguero early is inviting danger and putting pressure on our defence, especially. now we don't have solid defence!

its pep that nearly lost this match!why put Aguero against ultra defensive side, pep is respecting Aguero way too much!I hope and pray that the respect don't turn bitter!

Liverpool and City are the two best teams on the planet right now. Forget the Manchester rivalry. Forget Liverpool - man utd rivalry. A new rivalry Liverpool - Manchester City has been formed.
