Luis Enrique's Spain players are stuck in a labyrinth

Spain's situation called for a change after the World Cup and that seemed to have come after Luis Enrique's first two games in charge of a side that showed signs of regaining their pulse.

However, at the first sign of adversity they staggered and, at the second, they have fallen again.

The good thing is that football is one of those sports which can resurrect the dead and that could happen with the current Spain side if England and Croatia draw at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

In that case, Luis Enrique would be looked at a little differently, but doubts will continue to hang over the Spanish squad in any case.

There has been an excess of change and little consistency with it.

In five games in charge, four of them competitive, he has yet to repeat the same XI twice.

Only David de Gea, Sergio Ramos and Saul have been starters in all of the matches, while Rodrigo has featured in each game but has not started them all.

A total of 27 players have already worn the jersey since Luis Enrique took over in September.

That is a high amount when you consider that in the majority of games he could only make three substitutions because they were official fixtures.

Don't forget that one of the attributes of a coach is to be able to choose between all of the players in a country, unless they have ruled themselves out, as was the case for Gerard Pique, Andres Iniesta and David Silva.

With De Gea as the undisputed No.1 under the Asturian, a choice that isn't without criticism in some sectors, defence is the most worrying area.

Ramos is the captain and boss of the side, but he has already been joined at the back by Dani Carvajal, Nacho, Marcos Alonso, Inigo Martinez, Jose Luis Gaya, Sergi Roberto, Cesar Azpilicueta, Raul Albiol, Jonny and Jordi Alba, while Diego Llorente and Mario Hermoso could be given debuts on Sunday.

Therefore, 12 defenders used could rise to 14 if those two do feature against Bosnia and Herzegovina, only adding to the doubts.

The centre of the park, by contrast, belongs to Sergio Busquets and Saul plus a third man, who could be the currently injured Thiago or the ever-improving Dani Ceballos, who has featured three times, compared to two for the Bayern Munich man.

Rodrigo of Atletico is also an option if Busquets need rest, while Koke is also in the mix.

In attack, Spain started their new journey with Rodrigo Moreno, Iago Aspas and Isco in attack and that trio were back in the line-up in Zagreb.

Rodrigo and Isco started Luis Enrique's second game, but were joined on that occasion by Marco Asensio.

Suso, Paco Alcacer and Alvaro Morata are also fighting to feature.

The top scorer for the side is Ramos on four goals and he has proven a key man for La Roja in both defence and attack, as evidenced by his constant presence in the starting side as well as the responsibility of taking penalties.

Alcacer is next with three goals since September.

The stats show that there are doubts and concerns in some positions for Luis Enrique.

Tests will continue and, although the coach said that the goal is to be at Euro 2020, the disappointment of potentially not being in the final phase of the UEFA Nations League is evident.

The Luis Enrique era began in exciting fashion, but that has been deflating little by little ever since.
