Manchester United's armband has been handed to veteran Ashley Young this season - but at 34 years of age the England man does not represent a choice for the long term.
This, naturally, has got fans asking: Who will be Manchester United's next captain?
Let's take a look at the options.
De Gea
Who recently put pen to paper on a new deal, has been with the club since 2011 and has won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year a record four times.
The Spaniard openly admitted that he would love to be offered the captaincy role and has already been trusted with the armband on numerous occasions.
"I have been captain for some games and of course, it's amazing to be captain of a club like Manchester United and defend this badge," De Gea said.
Maguire
Solskjaer has stated that the summer signing has the character to captain a big club, while fans believe that Maguire is filling a void that has not been plugged since Nemanja Vidic's departure.
Pogba
The French midfielder regularly captained United at the start of the 2018/2019 season until his relationship with Jose Mourinho swiftly deteriorated and he was told he would never captain the team again.
Pogba is regarded by many as a world class player and the most talented individual in this current United team.
But after plunging his future at the club into doubt, stating he wants a fresh challenge in the summer, fans may need a trustworthy candidate to put some stability in this refreshed United team.
Rashford
Despite his age, Rashford is a local lad and has the perfect understanding of the club having been brought up through academy team. He is certainly an option.
McTominay
The final and potential candidate could be 22-year-old Scott McTominay who is continuing to impress at Manchester United since his senior debut in 2017.
Now a regular member of United's starting XI, above frustrated Nemaja Matic, McTominay continues to show exactly the standards expected from a Manchester United Player.
Although handing the role to McTominay could be seen as premature, the player continues to show the correct attitude and desire in the team - the exact qualities needed for a Manchester United captain.

Captain must have the following qualities: 1. Unquestionable dedication to the club 2. Able to inspire the team throughout the season and motivate the team during the game 3. Strong leadership qualities and able to command respect of the team and make them follow instructions willingly even if its against what they belief ... for the greater good 4. Must be intelligent... soccer wise able to read the game well and also the forms of his team which can differ for each match 5. Should be key member to the spine of the team, in other words either goal keeper, centre back or center mid fielder ... Sadly none of the 5 players have the above qualities yet. Given time in the case of maguire and a new contract in the case of pogba ... then both can be promising ...
