Speaking to RMC Sport, the Mayor of Marseille, Benoit Payan, has disapproved of Olympique de Marseille’s pending signing of Mason Greenwood (22) from Manchester United. The English striker is set to join Les Olympiens for a fee in the region of €30m, according to David Ornstein.
Greenwood signing for Marseille has become a controversial topic in French football. The 22-year-old was charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in October 2022. These charges were later dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in the UK during 2023.
Manchester United are not entertaining the prospect of reintegrating the academy graduate back into their squad following a loan spell at Getafe last season and are now set to cash in on the forward. Greenwood scored 8 goals and registered 6 assists while on loan in La Liga last term.
The potential signing of the United forward has not pleased the city’s mayor who is also a fan of OM. Speaking to RMC Sport, Payan said, “Greenwood’s behaviour is unspeakable, unacceptable. Hitting his wife… I saw images that deeply shocked me. Massacring his wife in this way is unbecoming of a man and he cannot have his place on this team.”
The Mayor of Marseille added, “The values of OM and Marseille are anything but that in fact. It’s a shame. I will ask Pablo Longoria not to recruit Greenwood. I don’t want my club to be covered with the shame of someone who hits his wife.”
