Paris Saint-Germain director Luis Campos revealed that a new salary request was one of a “set of circumstances” that led to Gianluigi Donnarumma’s departure.
The goalkeeper joined Manchester City late on in the summer transfer window after making 104 Ligue 1 appearances for PSG since joining them from AC Milan in 2021.
He kept 32 clean sheets in that time, while saving an impressive 74.9% of the shots he faced in league matches.
The Italy international also played a crucial role in PSG’s maiden Champions League triumph last season, making key saves in their fixtures against Arsenal and Aston Villa, and in a last-16 penalty shootout against Liverpool.
Donnarumma previously explained that head coach Luis Enrique told him to find a new club during pre-season training, but Campos has now revealed the factors behind the move in more detail.
“The club is more important than anyone. That has changed at PSG,” Campos told RMC.
“Donnarumma’s case was a set of circumstances that led to this decision, as he requested a salary at the level of the old PSG, not the current one.
“Our policy is very tied to merit. You earn more when you deserve it and when you play.
“Gianluigi was the first player we approached about an extension, but we quickly understood that it will be difficult due to his demands.
“We took time to discuss Gigio’s situation. We were forced to find solutions in a case where we couldn’t reach an agreement.
“The star is the club, the whole group. The salary policy applies to everyone. The club’s stability will not change because of one player who wants to be different.”
Donnarumma made his City debut on Sunday, as Pep Guardiola's side beat Manchester United 3-0.
PSG start their Champions League title defence against Atalanta on Wednesday, while City take on Napoli a day later.

man UTD are scared of selling a 31 year old Bruno Fernandes to Saudi cos that money could've been used to fund a very good defensive midfielder

it will affect your defense in UCl. Because they will need to check their keeper performance against big clubs which will delay their attacking plays.

this is just pointless. If someone is really doing well and demands an increment, I don't see anything wrong with that.
