The 2020 edition will be only the third time that Timor Leste have competed in the finals, having previously done so in 2014 and 2018. This time around, they were supposed to face Brunei in the playoff to decide who will go into Group A but Brunei pull-out citing Covid-19 complications.

One of six teams that have participated in all 12 editions of the AFF Championship thus far, Indonesia could perhaps count themselves as the unluckiest team having finished bridemaids on five separate occasions with the 2002 edition being the closest they ever came to landing the coveted trophy when they were edged out in the penalty shoot-out by Thailand.

Consistency is the name of the game for Laos when talking about them in relation to the AFF Championship. Out of the 12 editions thus far, they were involved in 11 editions with the 2020 AFF Suzki Cup going to be their 12th appearance in the finals.
