Aberdeen are closing in on a transfer coup with the loan capture of Manchester United striker James Wilson.

Once described as 'one of the brightest young English prospects' by former Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal, the 22-year-old was undergoing a medical in the Granite City on Sunday.

Boss Derek McInnes hopes to finalise a season-loan loan deal for the former England under-21 international over the next 24 hours.

A graduate of the United academy, 6ft tall Wilson burst onto the scene with two goals against Hull City in his first-team debut on May 2014.

Involved in games against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, Wilson also started against Liverpool and was rewarded for his promise when Van Gaal gave him a new four-year deal in September 2015.

His upward progression as a rival to Marcus Rashford was halted by an anterior cruciate ligament injury while on loan at Derby, with the striker scoring once in nine appearances during a temporary switch to Sheffield United last season.

Keen to inject pace and running into his attack after selling Adam Rooney to Salford City, McInnes has played a waiting game in pursuit of his top pick and Sportsmail understands United will shoulder the vast bulk of Wilson's £30,000 a week salary.
