Alderweireld contract update offers Man Utd hope

The Tottenham defender, who has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, admits he is no closer to penning fresh terms in north London

Toby Alderweireld admits he is no closer to signing a new contract at Tottenham, with that revelation likely to have Manchester United believing that they can still strike a deal.

The Belgium international is set to see his current agreement in north London expire at the end of the season.

Spurs have the option to take up a 12-month extension, but activating that clause will also trigger a £25 million ($33m) buyout option for the 29-year-old’s many suitors.

Tottenham had been hoping to avoid that situation by agreeing fresh terms with a man who was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford over the summer, but there has been no progress in talks.

Quizzed by Sky Sports on whether he can provide any update on discussions, Alderweireld said: "Not that I can say, no. I'm focused on Spurs and trying to help the team. That's all I can do."

Alderweireld claims to have had “tunnel vision” when seeing his future called into question on a regular basis over the summer.

The endless rounds of rumours could have been an unwelcome distraction, but the Belgian believes he has put the speculation behind him to find true happiness on and off the field.

He added: "I'm the old Toby again. I try to do my best and help the team.

"How happy am I on a scale of one to 10? When you have a daughter it's 10 out of 10. It doesn't matter what happens. The joy that I get from that, I try to give it to my football."

Alderweireld is currently putting club matters to one side during the international break.

Belgium have Nations League clashes with Switzerland and the Netherlands approaching, with a star-studded side looking to build on their third-place finish at the 2018 World Cup.

They will have many of their leading lights available for their next two outings, such as Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku, but Jan Vertonghen will be unavailable after picking up a hamstring injury.

Alderweireld said of his Tottenham team-mate: "He is devastated he can't play but will try to come back as quickly as possible.

"If you're injured it's always mentally hard. He will get through this and become stronger."

some fans don't understand that age is just a number. Giggs played until 40 years but was still contributing more than other wingers like young and Valencia. who's youngster is better than messi or cr7? how old is alderweird compared to rojo, Jones and smalling? only 1 and 2 years older than them but better than them. We can use him for a short term and go for skriniar and romagnoli for the long term.isn't it interesting to have him, skriniar, romagnoli, bailly and lindelof in the same squad?

we are going backwards why are we going for people who want a bigger payday lol did he not learn with pogba an lukaku an Sanchez is like he wants to get the wrong players . yes don't ft me wrong toby is a good player but he has 4 seasons left in the tank ! why not use Rojo or if he really really can't stand to use jones why not go for a youngster that he can actually grow an mold .. one that plays week in an week out . we have so much of talent but we will kill it by buying older players to replace youngsters makes no sense at all . then 3 years later we have realized our mistakes an want to buy them back learn now already that old players mean nothing ! they just take up salaries , an take away the opportunity for our youth to grow .

you have a point but remember alderweird can be brought for less than £25m in January or for free next summer. He can help youngsters like Bailly and lindelof to improve. Rojo is good but injury prone, and at 28 we better sell him. Mou wants skriniar or/ and romagnoli but those 2 are not impossible mission for January. for me, I'd like alderweird as quick fix and skriniar for the future in and rojo alongside Jones who never improved since fergie out. Imagine having Bailly, lindelof, alderweird, smalling and skriniar in the squad, we will stop crying

If I were to be optimistic, Alderweireld wants to keep playing regularly and show he deserves a new deal with us. He’s going to focus on his play now and come back to the negotiating table later That’s what I want to believe

A little unsettling that he’s quoted as saying he’s not pushing for a contract at all. Sure hope this isn’t just him killing off the final year although I suspect that’s exactly what’s happening.
