Talks are progressing between Trent Alexander-Arnold’s representatives and Real Madrid about his proposed move to the Bernabeu at the end of the season, but no agreement has been reached yet.
Sky Sports News has been told that whilst there’s optimism on both sides, there is plenty still to be sorted on any potential deal, and there is no guarantee that he will be a Real Madrid player next season.
The Spanish giants have been long-term admirers of Alexander-Arnold and they’ve been working on a package to tempt him for almost two years.
With his current deal at Anfield due to expire this summer, the defender has turned down the opportunity for a lengthy, improved contract to stay at Liverool, and he has made it clear he wants to leave.
Under the transfer rules, Real (and any other club who wishes to approach him) have been free to negotiate openly with Alexander-Arnold since January. And whilst a potential buyer is obliged to keep Liverpool informed, and tell them if an agreement has been reached, Real have not done so yet.
He is Madrid’s primary summer transfer target and it is clear that Alexander-Arnold’s preference is to join Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.
However, the negotiations are complex - made even more so by the fact that he is a free agent, with the issues of signing on fees, image rights, performance bonuses and more, all to be addressed.
