Alphonso already made Luke Shaw view clear with Man Utd 'set to offer contract'

Alphonso Davies could replace Luke Shaw at Manchester United, despite admitting the Englishman was better than him a few years ago.

Davies, 24, is in the final year of his contract at Bayern Munich and the club look set to lose him for free at the end of the season unless they can tie him down to a new deal in the coming months. The Canadian left back is in high demand, with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and United all monitoring the situation closely and readying contract offers, according to German outlet BILD.

He'll be allowed to speak to other clubs in a few weeks' time, and while Madrid are favourites to sign him, it's understood that the Red Devils could test Bayern's resolve with an offer for the defender in January. United landing Davies would spell bad news for Shaw, 29, who has been the club's first-choice left-back for the best part of a decade.

But he might back himself to keep the Ghana-born star out of the line-up given comments Davies made about him back in 2021. When a follower on TikTok told him Shaw was "clear" of him, Davies responded: "What does that mean? Someone explain to me. I never really understood that – clear of what?"

He was then told that by saying Shaw was 'clear', the user meant the United star was the better player, to which Davies replied: "Ohhh! Oh, okay, I get it now, it means he's better. Yeah, I mean, he is, he's a really good player!"

Recurring injury problems have curtailed Shaw in the past few years, something which appears to have forced United into the transfer market. The former Southampton ace played just 15 times in all competitions last season and is yet to feature in the current campaign.

With Ruben Amorim - a coach with a history of using advanced, attacking full-backs - on his way to United, someone with the profile Davies has could very well be a good fit at Old Trafford. But Shaw isn't exactly a bad stylistic fit either, particularly with his ability going forward.

Davies joined Bayern from the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2018. He initially starred for Bayern Munich II but was promoted to the first-team squad in 2019. He's since racked up over 200 appearances for the German giants and has five Bundesliga titles and a Champions League winners' medal - among a treasure trove of other honours - under his belt.
