Amazon Prime could introduce all-women commentary line-ups for their Premier League coverage, after the idea proved 'really popular' in their NFL shows.
The streaming site broke new ground this year when appointing a broadcast team consisting of two women for its weekly live NFL show, and said it has gone down 'very well' with customers.
Now, with just over a year to go until it begins broadcasting Premier League football, Amazon bosses appear to be considering replicating that model.
The US tech giant has won the exclusive live rights to 20 top-flight fixtures a season from 2019, and said it will capitalise on having 'huge resources' and the flexibility to offer multiple audio options.
Asked about female diversity on air in its NFL coverage, Alex Green, Amazon Prime Video's managing director, said: 'As part of the Thursday night football coverage we take the core Fox feed with their own commentary team, but we decided to offer viewers an alternative commentary team with an all-female commentary team, Hannah Storm and Andrea Kremer, very well-respected NFL journalists in the US.
'That has proved really popular, it has gone down very well and people have really appreciated having the choice.'
In addition to the Fox feed and its own commentary by Hannah Storm and Andrea Kremer, Amazon Prime also offers customers the opportunity to hear Spanish and Portuguese commentary and an 'anglicised' commentary option, which is said to be popular among US viewers.
Speaking at the Leaders Sport Business Summit, Green added: 'As a streaming service, we can offer that type of flexibility to offer those additional overlays and commentary options. That is a great thing for us to explore.'
Amazon's Premier League deal marks the first time that a full round of matches will be broadcast live in the UK, and Green acknowledged it would be a 'big test'.
It will already demand a large team of talent, not least if the platform offers more than one commentary option per fixture.
Yet Green hinted throughout his talk that Amazon are keen to experiment with how they show live sport to make it exciting and appealing to new demographics.
When asked whether the cost perspective of overlaying alternative audio streams on the same TV picture made it 'not particularly onerous' and therefore 'easy to deliver', he responded: 'Absolutely'.

Good idea but there's one issue. They know nothing about football and should really be looking after the husband

How about female commentators for women's football and male commentators for mens football? Or is that just not pc enough?

I have nothing against women being sports presenters etc, some are brilliant like Kirsty Gallagher and Gabby Logan, but I can't tolerate women commentating on football, it's purely the tone of the voice not because of their knowledge or ability, there is a woman on MOTD and I have to mute it.

Would be a sad day for premier league football if that happened! Why meddle with something that works great and the fans love just to please the politically correct/equal right fanatics!!

Of course, we can never have too much PC rammed down our throats.

I'm a woman and I don't like women commentators for all sport. Tennis and handball I think women work well, but for football I prefer men.

I've got prime and I won't watch any football on there if a woman is commentating. There are jobs men can't do and jobs women can't do, commentating on a male dominated sport is just one of them, just like I'm not emptying any sanitary towel bins

The woman who commentates on MOTD is so annoying. It ruins it.

Good way to lose viewers, far too squeaky and they rarely make a decision, always sitting on the fence, not upsetting anyone. Not an Amazon customer so won't affect me.

Please keep your "Crusade" in Hollyweird and let us enjoy our premier league in peace, nobody has time for all of these attention seeking shenanigans. ..

Very annoying this, hate the way they stick women in as pundits on sky and bbc football when most have poor knowledge and are totally out of place. It also takes away a job from someone who actually knows what they are talking about.

Why? The way women are being forced on us as pundits, commentators etc.. is just getting crazy! It's pc gone mad! It should just be the best person for the job regardless of sex/race!

What are they trying to achieve? Do they think that all football fans are chauvinists and by inflicting female commentators on us we'll all see the light? Here's an idea, how about giving the customers good coverage without pathetic virtue signalling?
