An England fan has died during a journey to a local police station after he was found 'behaving aggressively' before tonight's Euro 2020 qualifier in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The 32-year-old man had been found in a 'helpless condition' in the city centre, according to a statement from Bulgaria's Interior Ministry.
Police and ambulance crews discovered the man near to Borisova Gardens, the oldest and best known park in Sofia.
An Interior Ministry spokesman confirmed that the circumstances surrounding his death were being investigated.
'He is believed to have arrived in Sofia to watch the England v Bulgaria match,' they said in a statement.
'At 10am, police received reports of a man in a helpless condition in the area of Ivan Vazov and GS Rakovski Streets.
'The 32-year-old was taken by an ambulance team to a hospital for examination, where he suddenly began to behave aggressively, threatening staff.
'As a result of his actions he was being transported to a Sofia police station.
'We are working with the prosecutor's office to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.'
'A cause of death has yet to be identified,' a ministry spokeswoman added.
Reports said the fan was under the influence of drink or drugs though this is yet to be confirmed by authorities.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office were unable to verify the man's death. They said that they were 'supporting a British man' who was injured in a separate incident.
They said they are in contact with the Bulgarian police.
The news comes just days after police in Prague arrested a group of 18 English fans in the city's Old Town for football related disorder.
Officers in riot gear on Friday set off smoke grenades and wrestled troublemakers to the ground in a show of force.
At the time, many England fans said that the police had been too heavy handed in the Czech capital.
Travelling supporters to the European qualifier games have been advised by UK police and the FA to behave themselves ahead of games. The 8.45pm kick-off on Friday meant that fans had the opportunity to drink heavily before the start of the match.

English fans always get into confrontations with other fans...
And the result for such behaviour cost his life. Hope others learned from this. That's what happened when they got drank unfortunately. I think the local authorities should take actions to ban their local pubs and off licence shops from serving alcohol on the day of the match. (applies to all countries) At least that would reduce the risk of violance and aggressions. [Crylaugh]
