Ancelotti confirms: Luka Modric will finish his career here at Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti has claimed Luka Modric 'will finish his career' at Real Madrid - with the midfielders' current contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Modric signed a one-year extension with the LaLiga giants last summer but contract renewal negotiations between the club and veteran are yet to be finalised.

But Ancelotti says there will be no issues with renewing the Croatian's contract and likened him to AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini.

Ancelotti said: 'Luka Modrić will finish his career here at Real Madrid. I don't know when but it will happen - this is the idea of the club and Luka.

'Modrić won't have problems to renew the contract - I compare him to Paolo Maldini'.

The 36-year old, who joined from Tottenham in 2012, has been at the heart of Real's midfield this season.

He played a crucial role in helping his team overcome Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Tuesday.

The 13-time winners looked destined to head out of the competition as they were 3-0 down. But Modric managed to set up Rodrygo with a superb outside of the foot pass before Karim Benzema scored in extra-time.

Speaking after the win against Thomas Tuchel's side, Modric told BT Sport: 'Unbelievable to describe this game. We were dead until the goal we scored.

'Chelsea scored three goals, maybe the first a bit lucky from a deflection. I can't say we played badly. They used their chances well and scored the goals.

'We didn't give up. We kept believing, fighting and in the end showed huge character.'

During his 10-year stay in Madrid, Modric has played 428 times for the club - scoring 31 goals.

He has also won LaLiga twice, the Champions League four times, Copa Del Rey as well as the Balon D'Or in 2018.

Ancelotti's side will seek to take another step towards winning the title when they travel to Sevilla on Sunday.
