Andoni Iraola: It's a shame to lose after leading twice

On matchday 4 of the Champions League group stage, Liverpool lost 3-2 to Fenerbahçe away from home. Liverpool took the lead twice in the match but conceded three goals from set pieces and were eventually beaten.

We now have Andoni Iraola with us. The match has just ended, and Liverpool lost. How do you explain this defeat? What does this Liverpool team need to improve?

It's complicated, because we conceded three goals from three set pieces. We've always handled these situations well before, but today there were gaps in our wall. For the last goal, Vedat Muriqi jumped between three of our players and won the header.

The second goal came after our own clearance, which gave the scorer a chance. The three goals came from a corner, a free kick from a wide area, and a long throw-in.

In the end, we lost the match, which is a shame because we worked hard to take the lead, and we did it twice. I think our passing game was good, but we couldn't defend against Fenerbahçe's set pieces, which are one of their strengths.

What will you say to the players today? Especially after the opponents kept pulling level and eventually completed the comeback, will you be gentler or stricter with them?

We have to acknowledge that the opponent scored three goals against us from set pieces. These situations were complex, but each time we could have done better.

The wall could have held its ground instead of turning, and for the last goal, we could have contested the header better. The second goal was probably more down to a rebound, which was difficult to deal with, but each time we could have done better. We must reflect on this, because we knew that set pieces are one of Fenerbahçe's threats.

One last question. Are you more concerned about the team's form in the league or in the Champions League right now? After all, there are still many matches left in the Champions League group stage, and the team is fifth in the Premier League. What do you think of the team at the moment?

What matters to us now is the league, picking up points in the league. I think that at the beginning of the season, we dropped quite a few points there. Next, we have an away match against Crystal Palace, which is a crucial game for us before the international break.
