Anti-racism campaigner Townsend slams Brighton for sacking Hughton

Anti-racism campaigner Troy Townsend has attacked Brighton and Hove Albion after they sacked Chris Hughton as manager.

Hughton's dismissal means there are now no black or ethnic minority managers working in the Premier League.

Townsend, who is head of anti-racism charity Kick It Out's mentoring and leadership work, told the Telegraph: 'We are now at worse than square one.

'People took my words out of context when [ex-West Brom manager] Darren Moore was sacked. What people don't understand is the real difficulties for black managers getting through the bottle neck at the top of football. We are talking about measly numbers.'

Hughton took charge of Brighton on New Year's Eve 2014 and took them from the Championship relegation zone to the Premier League after a 34-year top flight absence.

However he was sacked on Monday despite Brighton avoiding relegation, following a run of three wins in 23 games.
