Arsenal youngster Freya Godfrey is set to sign her first professional contract with the club this week.

The highly rated England U19 international is understood to have turned down offers from three WSL clubs to stay with the Gunners.

The forward recently returned to Arsenal after a season-long loan spell with Ipswich and was handed her senior debut in the Gunners’ 4-0 victory over Brighton on May 10.

Godfrey turned 18 earlier this month and is seen as a regular first-teamer in the future.

Had Arsenal failed to tie her down to a contract, they would have lost her for nothing.

FA rules state that players in the women’s game can move before signing a first professional contract at 18 without their club receiving a fee.

This is in contrast to the men’s game, which has a detailed system of compensation that has been established by FIFA.

It is a rule that several clubs in the WSL have lobbied the FA to change for the last two years.

Godfrey is likely to be sent out on loan season to gain more first team experience but manager Jonas Eidevall will make a final decision in the summer.
