Arsenal delay could cost them €5m as price rises for Spanish target

Arsenal are looking to sell Aaron Ramsdale before the end of the transfer window, and have already lined up his replacement. However their pursuit of Joan Garcia has become more expensive in the last few days.

The Gunners will not move for Garcia until Ramsdale’s exit is agreed, but have reportedly agreed personal terms with the 23-year-old Olympic gold medallist. Garcia was back in goal for Espanyol in their La Liga opener against Real Valladolid, and manager Manolo Gonzalez told the media in the build-up that he would only leave if his release clause was paid.

“He won’t leave unless it’s irreversible, if a club pays the clause. We want to have him here for a long time.”

Garcia’s release clause was set at €25m, but now Relevo have revealed that upon reaching mid-August, his release clause increases by €5m to €30m. The player is believed to be keen on the move, but during a post-match interview on Monday told the cameras that he was relaxed, and ignoring the transfer speculation.

While clearly they cannot conjure up an offer for Ramsdale, it’s certainly an expensive delay for Arsenal, if they do end up paying his release clause. Garcia is set to remain as David Raya’s back-up, and at 28 years of age, he will have no intention of going anywhere any time soon. Garcia’s potential is clear to see, but it’s a lot of money to spend on a back-up goalkeeper.
