Arsenal 'eye move for Brighton defender Ben White as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his defence'

Arsenal are reportedly eyeing a move for Brighton defender Ben White with Mikel Arteta desperate to strengthen his defence this summer.

The centre back enjoyed an impressive debut season in the Premier League and his efforts saw him called into England's 26-man squad for the Euros following Trent Alexander-Arnold's injury.

According to The Mirror, Arteta has become a big admirer of the defender and will look to make a move for him after the Euros.

As revealed by Sportsmail, Brighton will look to fend off any interest in White by placing a £50million price tag on the 23-year-old.

The Gunners are looking to freshen up their defence with David Luiz having left the club on a free transfer while Hector Bellerin could also depart this summer.

However, they will face competition from Liverpool and Manchester United.

The Seagulls rejected an offer of £25m from Leeds last summer but a bid in the region of £50m could be too good to turn down.

In a recent interview, Brighton chief executive Paul Barber admitted: ‘We know some of our best players aren’t going to be with us for ever and, if the right offer comes along and they want to leave, then they can go.’

White made 39 appearances in all competitions for Graham Potter's side last season, helping them keep 12 clean sheets in the Premier League.

His form saw him called up to Gareth Southgate's 33-man Euros squad before the Three Lions boss confirmed he would replaced the injured Alexander-Arnold on Monday.

The centre back was impressive in England's warm-up games with Austria and Romania and could force his way into the starting XI if Harry Maguire is not fit.

White faces competition from Conor Coady and Tyrone Mings to partner John Stones in either a back-four or back-five.
