Arsenal are in pole position to sign Benfica's in-demand left back Alex Grimaldo, according to reports in Spain.
The 23-year-old Spanish defender, a product of Barcelona's La Masia youth academy, has established himself as first choice for the Portuguese giants.
This has led to interest from several major European clubs, including Manchester City, Napoli, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid.
However, according to Mundo Deportivo, Arsenal lead the way and could make an offer ahead of the summer transfer window.
Arsenal are in need of a younger alternative at left back - current first choice, Nacho Monreal, turns 33 at the end of this month.
While Unai Emery also has Saed Kolasinac available, the option of high quality competition in the form of Grimaldo has great appeal.
Of all the rivals to the Gunners, Mundo claim Atletico are likely to fight the hardest for Grimaldo due to their own pressing need for left-sided defensive reinforcements.
Former Chelsea left back Felipe Luis is out of contract this summer, while Lucas Hernandez is also attracting attention from major European clubs.
Arsenal are also potentially hampered by a lack of funds, with Emery reported to only have a transfer budget of £45million if they do not qualify for the Champions League.
Grimaldo, who cost Benfica less than £2m when he signed from Barca in 2016, would now command a fee of at least ten times that amount.

Grimaldo should stay at Benfica!!! Benfica should do everything to keep him

I'm really impressed with the news and that would be because Arsenal are being linked with exactly what they need and that would be DEFENDERS. I can't help but see something is going right here. I wouldn't mind if Emery spends his 45M right! COYG!!

Iam wondering where the various media outlets get transfer budgets and yet don't tell us budgets for other clubs be it in EPL,LA LIGA, SERIE A , LEGUE 1, BUNDESLIGA etc,I can say now that on another media they are reporting a budget of 100m BP....as GUNNERs fans we should be careful about some of this reporting which is only annoying is annoying us...👹😈👺, DML, Zambia

It’s a pathetic story. The club with the highest gate fee in the EPL has the lowest spending budget to attract talent. Now ain’t that ridiculous? The fans have been hi jacked and hoodwinked by management led by Kroenke who spends way more on his American sports franchises than Arsenal. We the fans should rise and demand a sale of the club.

I still don’t think what the difference is between him and kolasinac... sead kolasinac is creating a chance from fullback per 90 which is the the same as Grimaldo and Kolasinac rarely ever takes set pieces. Kolasinac just needs an athletic defender to cover him when he’s exposed.

You never know, really a talented player, in Barca B looked like a baller, on the left side of the park, think he could be used on the left side of a midfield rather than defensively. It would be a marvelous buy
