Arsenal legend Marc Overmars 'is open to a sensational return to the Gunners'

Arsenal cult hero Marc Overmars is reportedly interested in a sensational return to the club, potentially as director of football.

Overmars, 47, wrote his name into Gunners legend as an all-action winger between 1997 and 2000, where he won a Premier League title and FA Cup before leaving for Barcelona.

Now, according to De Telegraaf, Overmars is seeking a new challenge following eight years in the boardroom at Ajax - the club he joined Arsenal from.

'At Ajax, everything in terms of transfers ends up on the plate of director of football affairs Marc Overmars,' their chief writer Valentijn Driessen wrote.

'It is an open secret that he would not reject a new challenge at a major foreign top club or with his former employers FC Barcelona and Arsenal.

'He has been associated with those two clubs before.'

Overmars is credited with having made a major success of his director role at Ajax, which he began in 2012.

The club made the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019 with a host of young stars that came through the ranks, several of whom were then sold on to bigger clubs for significant prices.

Arsenal are also recruiting a new director of football operations after Huss Fahmy left the role in October.

Discussions regarding Overmars' Ajax future have been rumbling for months, with Manchester United rumoured to be interested in bringing his expertise to Old Trafford.

Having welcomed back ex-player Mikel Arteta into the fold at Arsenal, fans could be treated to the sight of another legend in the hierarchy before long.
