Marc Overmars will not leave Ajax mid-season to become Arsenal’s sporting director, but he remains favourite to fill the role and could still join in the summer.
The club’s head of football, Raul Sanllehi, is leading the hiring process for the key appointment following the recent exit of recruitment chief Sven Mislintat.
Roma’s director of football, Monchi, is also being considered because of his fruitful working relationship with Arsenal manager Unai Emery at Sevilla.
With Emery’s season looking increasingly troubled, with four defeats in the last seven games, there had been talk that Arsenal wanted to make an appointment before the end of the season.
But former Gunners winger Overmars could only join in the summer, with Ajax still involved in the Champions League and a title race with PSV Eindhoven.
Both men have strong records in the transfer market, which Arsenal recognise they will need to utilise for a squad overhaul.
One of Overmars’s many successes at Ajax was the signing of Frenkie de Jong, from Willem II for £900,000, whom the club sold to Barcelona for £66 million.

Spurs are lightyears ahead. Arsenal will do well to get into top four in the next twenty years. Very poor team, no backbone, no leadership. Very funny to watch.

Why hire anyone if the board has no ambition whatsoever

More than anything right now Arsenal football club needs Board members who have some identity, some passion for the club. Better still, a willingness to invest new funds in the club and give the manager some real support. That is clearly not the case at present and it is creating an increasingly toxic backdrop which is a delight for all non-Arsenal fans. .Troll fodder!

Why hire him? His idea the other was to resign Sanchez. That would be a horrible idea

Enjoy it while it lasts Tottenham. Understand after finishing behind Arsenal 22years on the run notwithstanding the leagues and cups won, incidentally the 2nd time Arsenal won the league at White Hart lane, then Spurs fans have to be upbeat. Sooner or later Arsenal will be back

they are not talking of how to realise money to the coach, so that he can make marque signing. Arsenal don't need a trial now we need success and Overmas and Monchi can't give success without money. how many trophy has Mark O and Monchi won since they move to Roma and Ajax?

hiring him to do what? Arsenal can't afford to buy players and now they want Monchi or Overmars to do what specifically?

I'd rtaher have someone like monchi who understands emery instead of overmars who has had a bipolar stint as ajax's technical director

Marc Overmars reckons Alexis Sanchez should go back to Arsenal. Does he not realise Arsenal will not pay Sanchez's ridiculous wage salary.

I don't even think we need a director of football what we need is a competent manager who we can trust with money to make the right signings something which Emery is clearly not.

Arsenal: Look how old you have become. Overmars: I see something much worse has happened to you.

Overmars is unbelievably naive! ___ He pontificated yesterday that the intractable, unprofessional and mercenary Man United flop Alexis Sanchez - who didn't get along with the majority of teammates at Arsenal - should return to play again for Arsenal! ... As such you can probably conclude that he is not suitable to be Arsenal's director of football.
