Arsenal's WSL opener against Liverpool was witnessed by the biggest crowd in the history of the Women's Super League.

A record 54,155 people were in attendance as the hosts suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners, strengthened by the addition of Alessia Russo, are one of the favourites to go all the way after finishing third last season.

However, their campaign got off to the worst possible start as Miri Taylor's second half strike claimed the three points for the visitors.

January signing Taylor pounced from Missy Bo Kearns' cross to slot home for the side who finished 24 points below their opponents last term.

England star Russo had an afternoon to forget, managing only one attempt at goal and three touches inside the penalty area.

She was then replaced during the second half as her side tried to find an equaliser.

Arsenal's next game is away to Manchester United on Friday while Liverpool host Aston Villa on Sunday.
