Arsenal’s management selection committee met for dinner at a private London venue early last week to discuss their options, as faith in interim coach Freddie Ljungberg to hold the reins long-term diminishes.
Josh Kroenke, Raul Sanllehi, Edu, Huss Fahmy and Vinai Venkatesham held the summit to work out their strategy for the rest of the season and beyond, with Arsenal, who go to West Ham tomorrow, in the midst of their worst run for 42 years.
Arsenal are sifting through a variety of names and, as in 2018, have to decide on a wholesale rebuild with a younger candidate such as Mikel Arteta or to opt for experience.
Having missed out on Brendan Rodgers, who signed a new five-year deal with Leicester last week, and with Rafa Benitez too expensive to lure from China, Arsenal will focus on candidates such as Carlo Ancelotti at Napoli or Max Allegri, the former Juventus coach — although he says he won’t work until the summer.
Marcelino, who won the Copa del Rey with Valencia last year before being sacked, largely due to the politics at the club, is well known to Sanllehi. Patrick Vieira, who is struggling at Nice, would be considered because of his status at the club but his troubles in La Ligue mean it is difficult to make a convincing case for him.
Marco Rose, who was at RB Salzburg, has taken Borussia Monchengladbach to the top of the Bundesliga but has only just started there and would be unlikely to move mid season. Julian Nagelsmann at RB Leipzig is expected to complete two seasons at the club before moving on to an elite job, most likely Bayern Munich.
Another option for Arsenal would be to pursue Ralf Rangnick, who is head of sport and development for the Red Bull teams. Although he was regarded as highly as Jurgen Klopp in terms of his tactical thinking in Germany and is said to be intrigued by a move to the Premier League, he is 61 years old and is used to having significant control.
The meeting last week underlines the growing distance between executives and boardroom, with Josh Kroenke the only board member involved in the recruitment process and the clutch of executives present representing the real centre of power at the club.
As the club is facing a fourth successive season outside of the Champions League and with star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang likely to leave in the summer, given that he only has 18 months on his contract, any new coach would be inheriting a club at its lowest point in recent history.

I'm telling you the manager/coach that's best for Arsenal is unknown to them and the so termed professional football industry, but he is one of the best in football by a country mile.

It's better to get a coach that is well known to Arsenal and understands Arsenal very well than get a coach somewhere because he's doing well now. The current performance of the team the person is coaching shouldn't be the main deciding factor to choose the manager. After all coaches are sacked due to poor results but they can go and perform wonders elsewhere. Therefore, Viera should not be denied the opportunity if Arsenal want an ex player. For me, I don't want a coach that is over 50 years. Preferably a coach in his 40s is better but should be somebody that agrees with the values and philosophy of Arsenal FC, some one that has EPL experience. Its an opportunity to get Arsenal FC back to its pride of place amongst elite clubs in Europe.

Arsenal need two best defenders who doesn't panic when seeing striker coming.. I think Luiz and Holding are good players for me so far... but Skoraties, chambers, mustafi en Berlin are always panic prone. those players they don't cope pressure. I don't think we need new coach for now... I like the way Freddie substitutes system. Emery was wrong coach
luiz is the scam of the lot...arsenal shouldn't have bought him in the first. place

Why would Arsenal have 2 Indians on Board? India I s not a Football nation, how can their Nationals be good administrative personnel? They certainly have injected Indian fraudulent business practices across d globe to d running of arsenal; no wonder Bellerin claimed ; ' no matter how hard d players work at trains it doesn't work on d pitch hence, he was lost of words in his recent interview on Arsenal Blog after loosing the last match. ' I believe d Club needs cleansing from top to bottom; Indians are bad business partners, Josh Korenke was act fast otherwise Arsenal is heading for relegation!!! shalom.

need to sack ljungberg if he fails on Monday, or else we will be knocked out of europa cup on Thursday. look at Ferguson at Everton in his first game. and compare to ljungberg sitting on the bench. no passion.
but it's the player who are shaming the rich history of our club..shameless all of them

Its too late for this highly rated owner to bring back the old memory of Arsenal. The downfall began when Arsene Wenger was forced to leave the empire he had created for a long period. It will takes another 5'-10 years before Arsenal could resume to his former self.

The problem with arsenal started since las season already..why would they let ramsey go for youngsters in bench..if ramsey still in arsenal then it makes sense to drop ozil now. Since ramsey also has creativity but different from ozil. And they sold a winger, iwobi, and loaned miki to roma, for 72 mil pepe, who is on the bench now. Pepe was bought for 72 mil and still can't impress. Ozil wages can be negotiate but that 72 won't be refunded.
