Bayern Munich top scorer Robert Lewandowski struck again as the German champions demolished Hoffenheim 4-0 on Saturday to remain top of the Bundesliga, a point ahead of Borussia Dortmund.
Match Report
Absent due to illness, Julian Nagelsmann must have been dancing round his living room at Bayern's performance. Lewandowski set the tone with a dinked effort just wide of Oliver Baumann's far post, before Serge Gnabry had a goal ruled out for a foul in the build-up against teenager Jamal Musiala. The Germany international's next effort stood, though, with Musiala again the provider for a clinical finish through the goalkeeper's legs. Lewandowski raised the bar with a quite sensational 20-yard strike after Thomas Müller had wrestled a long ball off Bayern loanee Chris Richards. Only Baumann's outstretched leg denied the leading Ballon d'Or candidate his second late in a decidely one-sided first half.
Bayern didn't play with quite the same level of intensity after the restart, but still created chances through Musiala and Marcel Sabitzer - the midfield pair firing wide with long-range attempts after Hoffenheim's Ihlas Bebou had crashed a volley wide. A mix-up at the back involving Benjamin Pavard almost let in Hoffenheim substitute Robert Skov, but Dayot Upamecano was able to scramble clear. Georgino Rutter scooped over from Skov soon after as the visitors enjoyed an encouraging spell of possession, only for a Bayern late show to extinguish all hopes of a Hoffenheim comeback. Substitute Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting turned in a corner and had an effort chalked off, before fellow sub Kingsley Coman's emphatic finish rounded out another gala display from the Bundesliga leaders.
