Manchester United have landed the signing of Joshua Zirkzee for a little under £40million as their summer business begins.
The Dutchman, signed from Bologna, is the first piece of business completed by the club since their minority takeover by INEOS. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has recently bought Dan Ashworth on board as their new sporting director and the ex-Newcastle and Brighton chief has had an immediate impact.
Zirkzee helped Bologna shock Serie A last term but qualifying for the Champions League. He was previously on the books at Bayern Munich and his exploits in Italy saw him named in the Netherlands' squad for the Euros this summer.
The 23-year-old will now compliment Rasmus Hojlund in attack as United further add to their attacking depth. Recruitment has been a real area of weakness for the Red Devils, but Ashworth's comments following the Zirkzee announcement offer an insight into the change in approach.
He said: "Securing a forward to enhance our already strong group of attacking players was a key aim for this summer. We are delighted that we’ve managed to sign a player of Joshua’s calibre this early in the transfer window.
"Joshua is an outstanding talent who is ready to make an impact for Manchester United. His ability and desire to grow into a world-class player means that he will be a great addition to the squad that we are building for the exciting season ahead and beyond.
"Having already achieved a significant amount in his career, we will provide Joshua with the perfect platform to reach the next level under the guidance and support of Erik ten Hag and the coaching staff."
It was telling that Ashworth made it clear that United were ready to continue investing in areas where they already have depth. Last summer they spent big to land Hojlund, yet weren't afraid to shell out more cash in landing competition for the Dane.
The sporting director also underlined his happiness at getting the deal done so early in the summer. In years gone by United have either let deals rumble on for months or acted late amid accusations of panic buying. This time they've been quick to identify a target and secure the deal.

The lies has started as usual, inflating actual fees of UNITED signings, instead of £36m this article is telling us it's £40m. £4m you added is a huge money. Please be truthful in your write ups for once.
