Aston Villa 3-2 PSG (agg 4-5) - PLAYER RATINGS: Who looked fragile at the back?

Paris Saint-Germain held off a spirited Aston Villa to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League in a thrilling quarter-final, second leg at Villa Park.

Villa looked down and out when Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes put the French giants 2-0 up on the night and 5-1 on aggregate inside the first half an hour.

But Unai Emery's men rallied and launched a superb comeback in front of the watching Prince William and Prince George.

Youri Tielemans gave Villa hope in the first half before two goals in as many minutes - scored by John McGinn and Ezri Konsa - before the hour mark set up a thrilling finale.

Villa could not find another to level the tie as PSG survived a huge scare to progress to the last four, despite losing 3-2 on the night.

Mail Sport's TOM COLLOMOSSE was at Villa Park to rate the players' performances.

ASTON VILLA (4-4-1-1)

EMILIANO MARTINEZ 7

Hesitated for a split-second on PSG’s opening goal but could do little about the second. Two second-half stops from Dembele.

MATTY CASH 6

Troubled by the pace of Barcola and could not catch the PSG winger for the opener but contributed to the fightback

EZRI KONSA 7.5

Tough against this PSG side who have no orthodox centre-forward but he stood up as usual and took his goal well.

PAU TORRES 5.5

Could have been more decisive when Barcola crossed for the first goal and often looked fragile when back-pedalling.

LUCAS DIGNE 7

Did well defensively early on and timed his attacking bursts well though left stranded upfield for the second goal.

MORGAN ROGERS 6.5

The volume lifted a couple of notches whenever he took the ball and one left-foot shot crept just wide.

BOUBACAR KAMARA 7

Tried to shield his centre-backs and made some key interceptions but the pace of this PSG side will trouble any defensive player.

AMADOU ONANA 6

Brought into the side to give Villa greater physicality in the middle and aerial threat at set pieces.

JOHN McGINN 8

Lively from the off, always taking the positive option and harrying his opponents. Brilliant run for second goal. Surprise when he was taken off.

YOURI TIELEMANS 7

Pushed into the No10 role, his deflected strike put Villa on the board and he used the ball well when he could.

MARCUS RASHFORD 7

He will never be as involved in general play as Watkins but delivers moments of magic like the assist for Konsa’s strike.

SUBS

MARCO ASENSIO (for McGinn, 66) 6

JACOB RAMSEY (for Onana 66, 6) 6

OLLIE WATKINS (for Rashford, 76) 6

IAN MAATSEN (for Digne, 76) 6

ROSS BARKLEY (for Tielemans, 88) 6

MANAGER UNAI EMERY 7

His team were forced to chase the game and this left them exposed to the devastating PSG counter-attacks.

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN

GIANLUIGI DONNARUMMA 8.5

Made an important reaction save from Torres in the first half and three more in the second as PSG wobbled under the Villa pressure.

ACHRAF HAKIMI 7

Showed tremendous speed to score the first goal and stuck well to his defensive tasks too but was also stunned by the comeback.

MARQUINHOS 7

Back in the side after missing the first leg through suspension, the captain brought experience and calmness to his back four – until the Villa onslaught.

WILLIAN PACHO 6.5

One of Europe’s rising defensive stars, he started well but then found himself all at sea when Rashford hit his stride.

NUNO MENDES 6.5

He is an excellent technician and fine athlete – though sometimes too impetuous. Brilliant second goal but needs to work on his defending.

JOAO NEVES 7.5

Very important block to stop a Rogers shot at source and did plenty of vital dirty work for his team.

VITINHA 5.5

The conductor of the orchestra was unusually off-key, making three wayward passes before the break that could have cost his team.

FABIAN RUIZ 8

Did well when Villa had the ball and kept it moving when PSG had it. Some fine interceptions and passes out wide.

KHVICHA KVARATSKHELIA 5

Starting on the right, he was not the same player as he was in the first leg and his mistake led to Tielemans’ goal.

OUSMANE DEMBELE 7.5

Always kept the back line on their toes and set up the second goal with a smart pass. Fearsomely quick.

BRADLEY BARCOLA 7

Perhaps even quicker then Dembele – as he showed by racing on to Nuno Mendes’ pass to create the first goal for Hakimi.

SUBSTITUTES

DESIRE DOUE (for Barcola, 58) 7

MANAGER LUIS ENRIQUE 5.5

Said his side would not come to defend and he was true to his word as his team took plenty of risks – probably too many.

REFEREE JOSE MARIA SANCHEZ 6

Angered the home crowd with his policy of letting the game flow and accidentally elbowed Joao Neves in the face.
