Atalanta boss Gasperini reflects on his players now coaching in Serie A: So many rejected my tactics

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini is happy seeing Serie A now adopting his three-man defence.

Gasperini discussed the defensive system after victory over Roma.

He said, "I must say that for many years it has been almost misunderstood. Genoa came from C, in Serie A they have touched the Champions League. It was a team from which Motta, Palladino, Juric, as well as Paro and Bocchetti were born. As long as we stayed in Genoa, despite extraordinary results, that football wasn't accepted.

"There was talk of ancient football. There were difficulties at Inter, I was rejected because I played with the 3-man defence, then Inter won with the 3-man defence, Chelsea won with the 3-man defence, Mourinho now plays 3-man.

"I was rejected, all the others are fantasies, poems. At Atalanta I had the consecration because Atalanta went to the Champions League for three years in a row, we made converts. My hope is that some of these will go to some big names to bring this idea of football, since I may not get there anymore.

"I hope that some of these, who deserve it, can arrive. Meanwhile (Monza coach Raffaele) Palladino won today..."
