Manchester United are reportedly considering a £103m bid for Jan Oblak this summer as part of a three-man shortlist.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer already has a goalkeeping dilemma at the club as David de Gea and Dean Henderson battle it out for no. 1 spot at United this season
The seasoned Spaniard has retained the role the majority of the time, but Henderson has impressed when called upon though, and is set for a long run of games to establish himself with De Gea absent on paternity leave.
However, it may not matter how well the England international plays after all, with a new blockbuster signing potentially on the horizon.
According to Sky Sports, the Red Devils are weighing up a move for Atletico Madrid stopper Oblak, having scouted him for over a year.
It is understood that United chiefs have concerns over the future of De Gea, and could use him as leverage in a deal with Atletico to lower their asking price for Oblak.
The Slovenian has a release clause of £103m as part of his contract, which still has two years to run, but it is claimed that is probably out of United’s budget.
Lille keeper Mike Maignan and AC Milan stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who could become a free agent this summer unless he signs a contract extension, are alternative options for Solskjaer.
The frustrated Henderson has been linked with a move to Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund in recent weeks.
But former United keeper Ben Foster has backed the 23-year-old to come through as De Gea’s long-term replacement due to his mentality.
"Dean is a proper goalkeeper. You ask anybody in football nowadays that has watched him play and you can just see that he has got it. He has got the ability," Foster told Sky Sports News.
"The main thing with playing for a team like Manchester United is having the mentality.
"When I was at Manchester United all those years ago, I felt like I had the ability, but I definitely didn't have the mentality.
"I wasn't ready for it but with Dean, nothing seems to faze him.
"Dean Henderson wants to play first-team football. He is coming off the back of last season with Sheffield United where he was incredible, really outstanding.
"He just needed to carry on playing first-team football. He signed a new contract.
"David de Gea got the nod ahead of him but David is in the same boat. He wants to play first-team football.
"When you have got a situation like that it is never going to end nicely. Somebody is going to have to leave and somebody is going to stay and play."
