Atwell and VAR: Bentancur's headbutt on Shaw ruled violent conduct, resulting in red card

In today's Premier League Round 6 match between Tottenham and Man United, Bentancur was sent off with a red card in the 78th minute. The Premier League subsequently announced the reason for the referee's decision on social media.

According to the Premier League's official announcement, Referee Atwell's red card decision for Bentancur's violent conduct was reviewed and confirmed by VAR. Referee Atwell stated: "I am showing Bentancur a red card because he headbutted an opponent."

VAR Jared Gillett confirmed: "He forcefully headbutted Luke Shaw—this is violent conduct. He stood up and headbutted Luke Shaw, with clear head movement."
