Former Liverpool defender Phil Babb has recalled being at the start - literally - of Cristiano Ronaldo's career and giving the now Manchester United striker a dose of "dark arts" as a welcome to the big time.
Babb had two years with Sporting CP, where he left a Primeira Liga winner. And during that stage in his career, the former Republic of Ireland defender was front and centre for Ronaldo's introduction to senior football.
Speaking to Tribalfootball.com, on behalf of OLBG, Babb recalled a teenage Ronaldo being promoted to senior training at Sporting for the first time.
"I remember the season when he joined us into the first team squad and in particular, I remember the first training session because I gave him a little clump in training!" said Babb.
"He was trying a couple of stepovers and as a 30-year-old at the time who had been around the block I had to put a foot in.
"He was this little skinny lad who had a blonde mop just kept running at me, so I had to give him a old school, dark arts tackle and left a bit on him.
"I like to think it changed his career forever after that!"
Babb admits at the time, Sporting actually had higher hopes for another academy graduate.
"You could see he had the tricks and the skills to be a good player, but there was another young player at the time called Ricardo Quaresma who was playing regularly in our first team.
"Cristiano Ronaldo was on the bench and out of the two of them you would have said Quaresma was the better player.
"He had everything, the physical strength of a man at 16 years old, the touch and the pace which was why he ended up moving eventually to Real Madrid.
"He's had a good career in the end."
Indeed Quaresma, who at 39 was still playing last season with Vitoria, can count on Barcelona and Inter Milan among former clubs. He also had a stint with Chelsea.
Babb continued: "But you couldn't really see it with Ronaldo and that's why when people ask me who's the greatest of all time, I say it's him.
"That's because he's had to work at it. From a physical point of view, he's gone from seven stone wet through to a sporting Adonis.
"He's worked at that, that's not a natural given talent to say what Lionel Messi has.
"Messi's centre of gravity and fast feet were God given, or whatever you want to call it.
"People said Messi was brilliant and unstoppable when he first broke through, but Ronaldo wasn't that.
"Technique, skills, sprint work, physique and staying late; all those things he has worked at and done it in different countries.
"For me, that makes him the GOAT in my eyes which might open up a can of worms.
"But when you see where he's come from to what he's achieved, it has been an incredible journey."

To be honest Messi is by far the most gifted footballer of any generation the only person comes close is Maradona and idk if you havent noticed but Maradona never did any training and he run past defenders with exact dribble style half is god given talent half is being short! Anyway But as he stated seeing Ronaldo play dribble score goals win trophies this is something you see in the movies a huble begging a loss many and i mean many obstacles brake downs and jusf pure mindset! I remember seeing Ronaldos first game for Man United he was fast very fast but he couldn't really pass nor shoot and playing in England back then well you can ask Hallands dad about that! Looking at Ronaldo now well damn i dont understand it ive seen some mentally strong people ive seen athletes who are just on another level but Ronaldo how? like seriously how does a guy with Zahas Abilities ends up on top of the world! i dont think i need to answer that i think even people that hate him can appriciate his lifestyle his dedication to push trough when 99.9 precent wont! Safe to say ive been a fan a fan of football and C Ronaldos journey many of us right now can have so many arguments so many conversations about whos the best player ever conversations come and go as of before it was Pele and Maradona but this is my generation this is where i watched 2 fantastic players compete and push each other i hope one day there will be a movie because this is so inspiring to the athletes but also to many humble and poor people people who one day will become Cristiano Ronaldo but in there own way in what ever way they push and dedicate themselves as Ronaldo did troughout his life they will also come out as winners i hope you all have a wonderful day 3 maybe 4 more years and the Era will be over criticize them call them done call them goalies clean sheet what ever you say the day that they decide to retire itll be the day when the world will finally come together and appriciate them both!

that's exactly what happens when exceed expectations all your life. you wouldn't understand because you are a nobody who is underachieving in whatever you are doing in your life. Ronaldo was on top of the game for far too long, he deserves the claps he's getting, learn to clap for others too

Looking back to history on how Messi and Ronaldo started you’ll realize that it was never a smooth sailing ⛵️ for either but it’s their hard work 😓 and believe that got them where they’re today

Areas of achievement does not necessarily define a GOAT! Pele played in Brazil all his life yet people still talk about his godly level skills. The clubs cr7 played for were all top league teams in their prime. I believe stats and achievements tell a better story, followed by personality.
so Ronaldo does not have all your stats and achievement to be called GOAT. continue

You making sense. with the achievement in England, Spain and Italy he's worthy to be called GOAT

Talent without hard work is nothing!! If you think Messi does not work as hard or harder than cr7 then you are truly troubled. They are both greatest indeed, the only difference being that Messi has more of a genius footballing brains besides muscle
