Balde becomes Barcelona's third-choice left-back after missing out against Bilbao

According to Diario Sport, Balde is in a difficult situation at Barcelona, and Flick's lineup choices against Athletic Bilbao sent a clear message.

In the match against Athletic Bilbao, Flick reinforced his stance on Balde. He had previously addressed the midfielder in a press conference, demanding 100% commitment, and against Bilbao, Flick's bench decisions demonstrated where he stands.

Balde returned to the squad after deciding to fight for his place at Barcelona. However, his body language revealed his disappointment—he did not get a single minute and appears to have dropped to third-choice left-back. Espartaco started the match, and when Flick adjusted the left flank, he turned to Cancelo. Meanwhile, Balde has been training with Spain's U18 team.

Balde had been warming up before returning to the bench. Like any professional, failing to get minutes made it difficult for him to hide his frustration. Balde understands his situation is precarious, not only from Flick's words but from the manager's tactical decisions on the pitch.

Balde now faces a crossroads. So far, he has chosen to fight and stay at Barcelona. Flick would certainly prefer to see an improved version of this academy product, as the 22-year-old still possesses significant potential.

Balde has declined from starter to substitute and has been further squeezed by Espartaco's emergence and Cancelo's arrival. Espartaco already holds a first-team number and can play as a left wing-back.

Balde can either accept this challenge or pursue offers elsewhere. With the transfer window closing soon, finding an ideal destination will be difficult, but Manchester United could provide an escape route. Recent reports have also linked AC Milan with interest.

Barcelona values the winger at around 40 million euros and would seek significant revenue if they sell him. The club has not taken a harsh line with him; unlike Fort and Casadó, Balde remains part of first-team training. However, he appears destined for only a marginal role under Flick.

Another option is to wait until the winter transfer window. If he remains a bit-part player by then, he could consider a move. Balde's contract runs until 2028 with a 1 billion euro release clause—a valuable asset Barcelona will only part with for a substantial fee.

A loan move, similar to Araújo's arrangement with Liverpool, is not currently being considered. The choice ultimately rests with Balde: stay and fight for his place, or seek a starting role elsewhere.
