Lionel Messi scored twice to send Barcelona into the Champions League last four at the expense of Manchester United.
Match Repport
Two goals from Lionel Messi helped Barcelona to a 3-0 defeat of Manchester United on Tuesday and a 4-0 aggregate triumph in their Champions League quarter-final tie.
With a 1-0 advantage from the first meeting at Old Trafford, the Catalans took command inside the first 20 minutes thanks to a double from their number 10, the second of which owed plenty to a dreadful mistake from David de Gea.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named an attacking line-up featuring Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford, but the blow of those first-half goals seemed to drain any hope of repeating the kind of performance they produced to stun Paris Saint-Germain in France in the last 16.
Match Events
1' Chance! Rashford hits the post!
OFF THE BAR! United open up Barcelona behind as Pogba slides a throughball forward for Rashford. He surges into the left inside channel and goes for the strike with the outside of his boot. Rashford connects well with his effort, but his strike clips the top of the bar and goes over.
10' No Penalty! Man Utd get relieved
OVERTURN! The referee has overturned his initial decision as Fred made a clean challenge on Rakitic.
16' GOAL! Barcelona 1-0 Man Utd (Messi)
MESSI PUTS BARCELONA AHEAD!!! 1-0!!! The Argentine punishes Young for a costly mistake at the back, burying a left-footed strike into the bottom corner. Young loses the ball under pressure at left-back and it travels to Messi on the edge of the box. He drops a shoulder to beat the challenge of Smalling before bending his effort around De Gea into the net. Clinical from Messi.
20' GOAL! Barcelona 2-0 Man Utd (Messi)
MESSI HAS A SECOND!!! BARCELONA 2-0!!! De Gea has a howler between the sticks. The Spaniard allows a trickling strike from Messi on his right foot through his grasp into the bottom corner. De Gea does not make many mistakes, but this one could be costly to his team. Messi surged into space and fired at goal, but he was hardly expecting to score with that attempt. A bonus for the Argentine and Barcelona.
26' Over the bar! Messi loses this chance
Messi surges into the box to collect Alba's cutback. He controls the ball with his first touch before going for goal with his second, only to place his volley over the bar.
36' Over the bar!
OVER! Messi tries an ambitious strike from distance. Not even he can test De Gea from 35 yards, curling his attempt harmlessly over the bar.
47' Chance! Messi nearly hits a hat-trick
Messi comes close to a hat-trick as he lines up a strike from inside the box from Suarez's cutback. However, Young is well placed in the middle to divert his shot behind for a corner.
61' GOAL! Barcelona 3-0 Man Utd (Coutinho)
COUTINHO PUTS THE GAME BEYOND DOUBT!! 3-0 BARCELONA!!!! Coutinho scores a stunner to all but place his side in the semi-finals of the Champions League. He collects an offload 25 yards from goal before advancing to the edge of the box. He gets half a yard on Smalling and it's enough to allow him to strike a perfect ball into the top corner, beating the hand of De Gea.

Righteousness will always prevail over evil, all ye devils. All the time the English media and the Manchester United crew were busy playing mind games we were busy preparing for the work on the field and we did justice on the field. We sent the devils back to their camp with their tails between their legs. Barcelona is for Christ! The only football club that is an ambassador for Unicef and even makes donations to Unicef for the love of Children. Imagine billions of Children praying for the success of Football Club Barcelona... Viva Barça

I've never seen Phillipe Coutinho play with such vigor, such tenacity, such quality married with a smile the size of the Pacific... he's really one for the future, he basically broke De Gea's back with that piledriver!

De Gea 4.6 that is very unfair considering the many excellent saves he made and the second goal from Messi wasn't weak but well timed and at near the post. Man u were up against the magic Messi and could do nothing about the defeat considering also missed excellent chances to score. I was not expecting any miracle but Barcelona to comfortable win the tie even if rashford had scored early.

Well well well! End of a fairytale. So unfortunate we started so well but failed cos of two clumsy errors. Worst of all, they all came from our only most experienced players. It's football though we never stood a chance against the mighty Barca. Quality n class separates us by a mile. Hope the Board does what needs to be done in the summer to get United firing again n back to that stage they were once at. Give Ole what he needs, if we are to be back on the biggest stage, we need a thorough overhaul and cleaning up this current squad and bringing in quality.

I dont want to hear anymore comparisons between Messi and Ronaldo anymore. Ronaldo is a great player but only Messi can play a game like that where he turns the opposing team into training cones. Also wtf was happening with De Gea? Martial yet again proven to be overrated. Only good United players were Rashford and McTominay and when McTominay is one of your best players on the pitch, you deserve to lose lol. Barca were a class above, United looked worse than we did under Conte against Barca last season.... Seriously the match was completely 1 sided. I gotta say though, De Gea basically gifted the opposition goals for free. Man it was brutal to watch a full 90 mins.

David De Karius..... am a man united fan, but today am disappointed in De Gea and Ashley young..... more so Ashley young, the moment he made that error leading to messi scoring the first goal, it changed the game completely..... we had a decent game the first 15 mins till they scored the first goal.... then De Gea gifted them the second goal.... anyway it was a good game, we had our chances but didnt used them so they punish us with their chances and our errors.... we forced a couple of decent saves from Ter Stegen too.... and De Gea also made a couple of decent saves to keep the scoreline a little bit respectable.... CE back stronger then time... #ggmu...

1.Manchester United have lost four consecutive away matches in all competitions for the first time since October 1999 – current manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær featured in all four of those 1999 defeats 2. Manchester United have lost on aggregate by four or more goals in a two-legged European knockout tie for the first time in their history (0-4) 😢 3. Barcelona are the first team to score three goals from outside the box in a Champions League match since Chelsea vs FK Qarabag in September 2017. ❤️

We must also give some respect to Barca potential youth player De Ligt for knocking out Ronaldo and co.

The only reason for Real Madrid got the 3 last UCL cups is that RM didn’t face Barcelona in the way to the finals 😎😂
