Barca rule out signing Mata after talks with player's father (Mundo Deportivo)

Barcelona have reportedly ruled out the prospect of signing Juan Mata after holding talks with the Manchester United star's father.

United triggered a one-year extension clause in Mata's contract last season but the 30-year-old midfielder looks set for the exit door this summer after a five-and-a-half-year spell at Old Trafford.

Mata has only made 13 starts in the Premier League since the start of the campaign and is open to the idea of returning to Spain, with Barca registering an interest in his signature.

According to Catalan outlet Mundo Deportivo, Mata's father – who also happens to be his agent – paid a visit to Barcelona's offices 'a few months ago' for discussions over a possible switch.

However, the report claims the La Liga giants decided against pursuing the move further as the club are already well stocked in Mata's position.

This comes amid widespread reports that Mata's compatriot and midfield partner at United, Ander Herrera, has agreed terms with Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking about his future back in January, Mata admitted that he missed friends and family back home in Spain.

'I've been in England for a while. It's true that at times you miss home, your family, your friends,' he said.

'But I don't know if I'll return to Spain in the near future.

'I'm calm, I'm at the fantastic club that is Manchester United, one of the biggest in the world.'
