Barcelona want Lewandowski to wear the #9 for three reasons

Barcelona completed arguably the headline signing of the 2022 summer transfer window, signing Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.

The Pole has inarguably been one of the best players in the world in the last half a decade. A claim which is backed up by his 161 goals in that period.

As a striker, Lewandowski made the #9 jersey his own at Bayern and is often colloquially known as RL9.

He might not have the same privilege at Barcelona, unfortunately, as that number is occupied by Memphis Depay. According to a report by SPORT, though, the club wants to give the #9 jersey to Lewandowski for 'several reasons'.

It is only natural that a centre-forward dons the #9 – it is part of the sport's heritage.

Not to mention Barcelona's own incredible history with the number. Luis Suarez, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Samuel Eto'o, Ronaldo, and Patrick Kluivert, among others, all had sensational tenures wearing the #9.

Probably more importantly though, Lewandowksi getting the #9 could prove to be a huge commercial success. It is in the club's best interest that the 'big' players wear the 'juiciest' numbers. Ansu Fati getting the #10 and Pedri getting the #8 now is not a coincidence.

Lewandowski's own brand name rides on him having the Numero Nueve, which could help Barcelona ride the same wave.

Therefore, it is very likely the #9 could be with a third player in as many seasons. Martin Braithwaite was asked to give it up for Memphis, and the Dutchman could be forced to follow suit.

Unless, of course, Barcelona somehow manage to sell him before the transfer window ends. There is just one year left on his contract, and while he might not want to move, Memphis' game-time could be hit drastically after the signing of Lewandowski and Raphinha.
