Bayern Munich's Upamecano is likened to Maguire by an Arabic commentator

Football fans were stunned as an Arabic commentator appeared to call Bayern Munich's Dayot Upamecano 'UpaMaguire' during the German's Champions League exit to Manchester City

The French centre-half endured another night to forget against Pep Guardiola's men, having already suffered a disastrous first leg display as Manchester City run out 3-0 winners.

Upamecano's quarter-final misery was completed during the second leg as firstly he was penalised and booked for a handball, which gave Manchester City a first half penalty.

Then, after Erling Haaland blazed the spot kick over the bar, it was the French defender's slip that saw the City striker make up for the miss and score the goal that all but confirmed Bayern's exit from the competition.

Yet, his evening took an even more awkward turn, when the Arabic commentary for the game struggled to pronounce the centre-back's name correctly.

Instead, they opted to call him 'UpaMaguire, in what can only be a slip of the tongue in comparing Upamecano's performance to the form of Manchester United's Harry Maguire this season.

Maguire has struggled to nail down a regular starting place under United boss Erik ten Hag and has suffered from a downward turn in form after a number of mistakes for the Red Devils.

It's not the first time the England defender has had some shade randomly thrown on him this season.

In December Maguire's name was bizarrely referenced by Ghanian politician Isaac Adango when comparing the Man Utd centre-back's performances to his rival's economic policies.

Adango claimed that vice-president Mahamudu Bawumia enjoyed scoring - political - own goals in much the same manner as Harry Maguire and that his opponent was 'tackling his own players and giving assists to opponents' just like the centre-back.

Going on to explain his comparison with a full explanation ridiculing the 30-year-old star.

'Manchester United went and bought him. He became the biggest threat at the centre of Manchester United's defence, tackling his own players and giving assists to opponents.

'Even when the opponents failed to score, Maguire would score for them.

Mr Speaker, you will remember in this country we also have an economic Maguire.'

Maguire has played 26 times for United this season, but Ten Hag has more often gone with his preferred options of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane at the centre of his defence.

Despite his struggles at club level, Maguire has still remained a constant for his country and played in both England's Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine last month, with Gareth Southgate remaining faithful to the defender.
