Bayern Munich stars were left furious when they were denied the opportunity to take a quick throw-in while Bukayo Saka received treatment for a head injury.
The Gunners star was receiving attention after a short corner from the home side saw Raphael Guerreiro's cross smack Saka in the face. With their star player out of action during the Champions League quarter-final second-leg clash, Arsenal's team took the opportunity to huddle and receive instructions from Mikel Arteta on the sideline during the pause.
The German giants looked to take advantage and took a quick throw-in but were soon pulled back by the referee's whistle and were left raging as it was sounded. Referee Danny Makkelie faced the ire of Bayern's players and coaching staff, while Arsenal were left frustrated by their opponent's attempt to take advantage.
Saka was okay to continue following the incident. The England international's fitness ahead of the game had not been certain with a late assessment on the inclusion of both him and Martin Odegaard.
It's not the first time that a referee has come under scrutiny in this quarter-final meeting. Makkelie took charge of the fixture having officiated five Champions League matches already this term including Newcastle United's 2-1 defeat to AC Milan at St James' Park, but he was not in place for the first meeting of Arsenal and Bayern Munich.
For that outing, Glenn Nyberg was in charge of proceedings. The official received plenty of criticism from Saka in the first leg, with the winger chasing him down to the tunnel.
Saka had been denied a penalty when he fell in the box after coming into contact with Manuel Neuer in the dying moments. Ultimately that looked to be the right decision following the game.
Swedish official Nyberg also denied Bayern a penalty on that occasion however. Gabriel handled the ball in the box from a goal kick having not realised play was already live.
The first leg finished 2-2 at the Emirates, which meant it was all to play for in the return leg in Germany on Wednesday night. It was a nervy first-half, with the teams going into the break goalless.
Joshua Kimmich's second half header proved the difference in Munich with the Gunners unable to land a glove on their rivals. The German ace's goal saw Bayern into the semi-finals of the competition.
