Man Utd goalkeepers Altay Bayindir and Senne Lammens are battling it out for the right to be No.1, with the former insisting the rivalry will help bring out the best in them both
Altay Bayindir has lifted the lid on his relationship with Manchester United goalkeeping rival Senne Lammens and their battle for the No.1 spot.
United boss Ruben Amorim said Bayindir and Lammens will fight for the right to be first-choice keeper, following Andre Onana's season-long move to Turkish side Trabzonspor.
Deadline day signing Lammens has moved above Bayindir to claim the No.1 spot after an impressive debut in United's 2-0 win over Sunderland before the international break.
That assured display between the posts means Lammens will keep his place for United's trip to reigning Premier League champions and arch rivals Liverpool a week on Sunday.
Despite their rivalry for the keeper's jersey Bayindir was among the United players to congratulate Lammens on his debut and revealed the pair are close, despite their personal competition.
“That is the way, everyone has to be together, always,” said Bayindir. “We have a good group, a good goalkeeper group, and we are always pushing each of ourselves on the pitch.
“Of course, we are fighting for the shirt, but in the outside, we have a good relationship, like how we did with Andre. He's at Trabzonspor and he's doing well.”
United have struggled at the start of Amorim's first full season in charge, losing three of their opening seven league games to stand 10th in the table, with Bayindir calling on every player to give more to improve their plight.
“I can say football is a team thing,” said Bayindir. “Everyone needs to work good, you know? Everyone needs to be focused. From my side, every day, after every game, we are improving ourselves and we're thinking what we need to do more.
“After the game, we are doing the analysis. We're seeing everything in the analysis, which parts we have to improve – everything. When you can catch the routine, you can be better every game, because it's about experience. Also you're learning something from every game and that's the important thing.”
United's failure to qualify for Europe and humiliating EFL Cup exit to League Two Grimsby means Amorim's side are currently restricted to one game a week, something Bayindir said must change next season.
“After the game, you have more time to recover and you have more time to be ready for the next game,” said Bayindir.
“But we want to play more games in the week. We can play three games. We want to play more games. It's why this year is more and more important than other years before, because we have to be good.
“Then next year, we want to play more games as, if you're playing for this great club, you have to do more and give everything yourself. I hope we can win more games and everything can be more positive for us. I hope we can make everyone happy.
“Sometimes I'm quiet but I was captain of Fenerbahce and I have this streak, I have this soul. I'm not quiet and calm. I'm always thinking what we have to do. It's never 'I don't care', never if we lose 'it's not my fault' – you can't be successful if you have this idea.”
