Hector Bellerin appeared smitten with his 'Boris Bike' on Monday, but the Arsenal star made it clear he was not endorsing the controversial politician with a smart quip on Instagram.
Bellerin posted a photo of himself riding an officially-named Santander Cycle, which have been very-much unofficially named after the former London mayor Boris Johnson since their introduction in 2010.
However, the Spaniard's caption left viewers in doubt as to where his allegiances lie in the perceived battle for the keys to No 10. He wrote: 'Only Boris I like is the bikes mann [sic].'
To the detriment of sponsor Santander and former sponsor Barclays, the London bike-sharing scheme have always been called 'Boris Bikes' due to the fact that he was running the city when they were introduced.
In actual fact, the Conservative MP had little to do with their implementation with his predecessor Ken Livingstone putting in the groundwork before ceding his position to Johnson in 2008. For various reasons, the name 'Ken Bikes' never got off the ground.
Bellerin may be inviting criticism from Johnson's political supporters, but the Spain international recently declared his intention to use his high profile to voice his concerns when he believes there is a responsibility to do so.
He recently told Arsenal's official website: 'I think as footballers we have a massive platform that we should be using way more than we actually are.
'I know it is very comfortable to just sit at home and stay with your family, your kids and your friends and not think about anything, but with the platform we have, we should be the people that scream at these social issues and out them out there, so as a society we can move forward.
'There are so many things as footballers that we could help more with.'
Bellerin has also become a spokesperson for the vegan movement, which has seen an exponential growth due to concerns over animal welfare and climate change.
