England star Jude Bellingham was sent off for dissent in a baffling incident involving the Real Madrid star.

The midfielder was in the side as the Spanish giants took on Osasuna. And it all started brightly as French forward Kylian Mbappe gave them the lead.

But during a confusing incident where Bellingham appeared to complain about a decision from the referee in the 39th minute, he was shown a straight red card. That call appeared to leave the midfielder even more confused, with a stunned look across his face.

Real boss Carlo Ancelotti was left furious in his post-match press conference, he said: "I don't want to talk about the refereeing because I want to stay on the bench. When Bellingham was sent off, he didn't understand English well, because he said f*** off, not f*** you. Which in Spanish is "don't f*** with me"

Explaining his take on the incident, Bellingham said: "I never insulted the referee, I’m glad to see there are the videos to show the reality despite the referee’s report. It’s clear that there was a communication error. It’s an expression like Spanish one ‘joder’… and the consequence is that he left us with one less player.

“It’s not an insult, it was an expression for myself. I’m here to apologize to my teammates as I put them in a difficult situation today," the midfielder added.

It was Bellingham’s second sending off for Real Madrid since arriving at the Bernabeu. He was also sent off late on a 2-2 draw with Valencia last season, picking up a straight red card deep into stoppage time also for dissent.

And Bellingham’s absence appeared to harm Real Madrid against Osasuna, who conceded a second-half equaliser and failed to find a winning goal. It leaves Ancelotti’s side vulnerable at the top of the table with just a two-point advantage over city rivals Atletico Madrid having played a game more.

Bellingham now looks set to be banned for Real’s next game against Girona. But he will be fine to play for their decisive Champions League clash with Manchester City.

The Spanish side hold a 3-2 advantage following their win at the Etihad Stadium, Bellingham scoring a dramatic late winner. Speaking after that game, he said: “It was a weird one as we played some of our best football of the season and find ourselves behind in the game.

“I don’t care what form City are in, they are still an unbelievable team and so difficult to play against, the way they move you and manipulate your positioning. It is always a really tricky to play against them.

“In the end we took one of the many chances, finally, so that is what made it count. I felt our performance deserved the win. We were playing well in the game and creating chances and felt at one point one would land.”

Asked what he could expect in the second leg, Bellingham added: “It’s a really good position. It is always nice to take a lead back home to play the second leg at home, it’s a real blessing. I’m sure the Bernabeu will turn out for that one and we have to give them a performance they deserve."
