Benitez explains why he had a harder time at Liverpool than Klopp

Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has explained a key difference between his time at Anfield and Jurgen Klopp's reign, which led to the Spaniard having a harder time at the club.

The Reds are on course for a first league title in 30 years, building upon their Champions League success last season - a trophy they also lifted during Benitez's tenure.

However, the differences between the Liverpool team of the mid-2000's and the current squad are significant, with the biggest difference being the club's ability to spend.

While Klopp's transfer activity has been boosted by significant sales, he has been able to spend far more than Benitez - something that has been highlighted by the latter.

“We had no money. Our transfer budget, in my last year, was €17m. So, with that you could not compete. We had to try to sell to buy and when you sell Javier Mascherano, Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres," he told Marca.

“It was the only way to try to get closer to the rivals. This Liverpool team has two or three years of very good investment and a lot of success in signing. And then, a coach whose opinion is valued by the owners.”

The difference has highlighted the fine performances of the FSG ownership, whereas Benitez had to work under the duo of Hicks and Gilette.
