Portuguese forward Betinho has revealed his shock at being included on Manchester United's Premier League squad list after an error, with the 29-year-old joking 'see you soon'.
The addition was spotted prior to Manchester United's match against Nottingham Forest, with the Premier League website listing Betinho with the squad No. 11.
There was initial confusion over the identity of the player, with fans quick to suggest it could be former Portuguese youth international Betinho - who shared the same birthday as the anonymous forward listed on the Premier League website.
Betinho, who has made over 60 appearances for SC Espinho since the 2019-20 campaign, has revealed he had been flooded with messages on social media following the error.
'I only knew it was true when my mates sent me messages and then I confirmed that it was indeed my name on the Premier League website,' Betinho told the Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Notícias.
'I got more calls today than on my birthday.'
Betinho revealed during the interview that he also works as a personal trainer, as well as playing for SC Espinho in the Portuguese lower leagues.
He began his career at Sporting Lisbon, before playing for Vitoria Setubal, Belenenses, Uniao Madeira and Lusitania in Portugal.
Betinho had made one appearance on loan for Brentford in the Championship in 2014, after impressing impressing then Bees boss Mark Warburton during the NextGen Series.
The 29-year-old has embraced the situation, posting a screenshot of the Premier League page on his Instagram stories with the caption 'Thank you, Manchester United, see you soon.
Betinho tagged Portuguese internationals Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot, joking 'It'll be a pleasure to share the dressing room with you'.
The former youth international also shared a photoshop of him pictured wearing a United shirt with the message 'The joke is getting serious'.
A video which replaced Cristiano Ronaldo's name with Betinho was also reshared by the player, with the caption 'Vive o teu sonho', meaning 'Live your dream'.
Fans had joked prior to the Nottingham Forest match that United had moved quickly to replace Ronaldo, after the Portuguese legend left the squad in acrimonious circumstances last month.
Ronaldo's departure had followed his explosive interview with Piers Morgan, where he hit out at the management of the Premier League giants.
United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed the club are in the market for a new forward in the January transfer window, insisting his side need to score more goals despite the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
Mailsport has previously revealed that ten Hag is only going to be able to complete loan deals in January, as the Glazers move to sell Manchester United after being owners of the global franchise since 2005.
The club have missed out on reported target Cody Gakpo to Premier League rivals Liverpool.
