Chelsea news: A major decision regarding a staff member in the medical department has been made by Todd Boehly after a plea from Blues players
Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has made a significant U-turn by re-hiring club physio Jose Calvarro after he was let go last September. The decision came alongside several other mass changes made by Boehly and Clearlake Capital following their completed take over of the club in the summer, but Boehly has now re-hired the experienced Spaniard.
According to the Evening Standard, the decision to bring him back was following a plea from players with some feeling as though the upheaval in the medical department was partly to blame for an injury crisis that hit the squad before the World Cup.
Along with Calvarro's exit, long-serving medical chiefs Thierry Laurent and Paco Biosca also departed the club. In the time between being brought back in at Cobham, Calvarro worked at Serie B side Como where former Blues midfielder Cesc Fabregas currently plays his football.
The exact intricacies of his return are quite complicated as he remains under contract at Como. Chelsea had been able to agree a deal that saw him return for one day a week as a consultant. Since then, he has flown to London to work with the team every Sunday.
After the World Cup physios Jason Palmer and Jon Fearn also left after nearly a decade of service. The major changes to the medical department were led by private physiotherapy firm Remedy in September and Chelsea have subsequently brought in Fearghal Kerin from Leinster Rugby and Dave Fevre as a consultant.
The return of a well-respected member of staff looks set to arrive at a similar time as the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as the Blues manager along with four of his closest confidants.
Alongside his coaching duties, Perez works closely with the club's medical staff to make sure that the squad are in the best possible physical condition. Pochettino's Tottenham were especially known for their relentless pressing and effort levels.

Boehly has loads of money. He thinks he knows better than everyone else. That's Chelsea's downfall. It has nothing to do with the coaches or players. Boehly needs to calm down and sit back in his office and let an actual sporting director handle things. Boehly is just another Woodward.
